Accents & Dialects Workshop Description:

This is an intensive for directors and actors using Knight Thompson Speechwork for three objectives:

1. Teach an accent.
This includes the people, posture, prosody, and pronunciation.
The intensive includes personal instruction for producing particular sounds.

2. Teach how to learn an accent.
Provides resources for samples.
Explains what information to focus on.
Explains how to utilize lexical sets.

3. Teach how to communicate what makes up that accent.
What information is necessary to communicate?
How can you teach an accent to a cast?

Students will be introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet, oral posture, and lexical sets. They will be given examples of accent breakdowns. The accent we learn will be selected from a list by the class the day before the intensive begins.

Knight Thompson Speechwork is strictly descriptive, not prescriptive. There is no accent from which others derive. There is no “good speech” as many accent and dialect coaches would claim. The purpose of Knight Thompson Speechwork is to grant an actor more agency with their instrument. As opposed to teaching an actor how, it teaches an actor how many: how many ways they can pronounce, produce sound, produce prosody.
